Bauer Media buys Pacific Magazines

Pacific MagazinesSeven West Media is selling Pacific Magazines to Bauer Media for $40m.

The proceeds are to be used in paying off Seven West’s debts, but the sale itself is subject to ACCC approval. 

Seven West and Bauer Media will also have new agreements to share lifestyle content and joint production of the Better Homes and Gardens TV show, plus a three-year ad contract for Seven West to promote over Bauer Media titles worth $6.6m. 

“The sale of Pacific Magazines is another major initiative aligned with our strategy to improve balance sheet flexibility and simplify the operating model to enable greater focus on growth initiatives,” said Seven West CEO James Warburton.

“The team at Pacific have been at the forefront of our groups transformation and have done a tremendous job at repositioning their business, but there can be no doubt that there is a greater future within a larger scaled magazine group.”

Rolling Stone Australia set to return

Music magazine Rolling Stone is bringing back its Australian edition in 2020, with The Brag Media landing the publishing rights.

The Brag Media CEO Luke Girgis is slated to oversee all content activity for digital, social, video, events, and merchandising, plus running new podcasts. The content pieces will be a mix of syndicated material from other Rolling Stone editions and new material for Australian readers.

Poppy Reid will be the managing editor and current The Brag Media news director Tyler Jenke is tapped for the editor job. 

“Rolling Stone is the most iconic music brand of all time and has meant so much to music, entertainment, and politics for over 50 years. We are extremely privileged to have it join The Brag Media family,” said Girgis.

Tilley bids Triple J hosting goodbye

Tom Tilley has tendered his notice from Triple J. 

The host of youth issues and current affairs show Hack said he will finish up in mid-December to pursue new interests, including his writing contract with ABC Books and Channel 10’s The Project. 

He has been with Triple J for 12 years, eight of which involved him hosting Hack. 

“Hack has taken me further than my wildest dreams, from a naive triple j listener in the paddocks of Mudgee to interviewing the country’s most powerful people. While grilling ministers live on radio was a lot of fun and often necessary, my proudest moments are our conversations about mental health. Allowing young people around Australia to open up, realise they’re not alone in their struggle and then push our politicians to do more, is something that brings me to tears when I think about it,” said Tilley.

Vogue Australia site revamped

Vogue Australia has rolled out a brand-new look for its website, vogue.com.au.

The revamp was based on parent firm Conde Nast International’s global design template for Vogue’s online presence, which focused on highlighting images and associated articles in the centre of a page, plus including premium ad content in selected spaces and Vogue VIP member access. It is also fixed up for optimum viewing on mobile devices.

The Vogue Australia team worked with Conde Nast to ensure the design elements were accurately placed. The project is part of Vogue Australia’s 60th anniversary celebrations.

Reilly to finish career

Jane Reilly is retiring after a 44-year career.

She announced in today’s broadcast of Fiveaa’s breakfast show David and Will that she will retire at the end of 2019, with her farewell airing set for 13 December. 

She had been a guest contributor since leaving the show as host in 2015. However, she has declared herself available for Fiveaa’s special projects that may arise in 2020.

“I’m calling next year, my first year of retirement, my big gap year… no plans for next year I’m just going to freewheel, I’m going to misbehave, I’m going to have a lot of fun. I hope you will still let me back occasionally,” said Reilly, whose career began at SAS 10 back in 1975, where she stayed until 2013.

Bardas signs with Val Morgan

Val Morgan Digital has hired Amanda Bardas as the new executive editor of its digital publishing arm.

She was accepted for the job on account of her eight years’ experience in the local fashion publishing scene, roughly half of it with Allure Media, where she rose from fashion editor of Who What Wear Australia to executive editor. 

“I’m looking forward to leading our team as we build and launch a new publishing platform that fills a gap in the Australian market for content that unlocks rich conversations and drives a deeper understanding of entertainment, life and style, wellness and culture,” said Bardas.

Fordham to join NewsCast

NewsCorp Australia has appointed Del Fordham as NewsCast’s head of audio. 

He will collaborate with NewsCast’s component brands in the development and production of original audio material, and help increase their audience engagement. NewsCast chief and News Corp Australia GM for commercial networks Ainslee O’Brien will be Fordham’s immediate superior. 

Fordham has over 15 years’ experience in the audio content field, having produced and managed shows for companies including the ABC, Southern Cross Austereo, and NOVA Entertainment. 

“I’m passionate about original productions, on-demand content and bringing together different creators and content pillars to create synergies. Our growth strategy and upcoming original content slate will only build on the great momentum NewsCast has,” said Fordham.

The Guardian offers extra NZ coverage

The Australian edition of The Guardian newspaper will have more content pieces about New Zealand.

International news editor Bonnie Malkin said expanding the paper’s New Zealand coverage was warranted after uncovering strong interest from Kiwi readers for existing articles. The new section will feature articles with themes relevant to NZ readers such as social justice, social inequality, indigenous affairs, environmental issues, politics, and sports.

To cover the new content load, the Guardian is seeking new freelance staff to supplant a full-time and a part-time journalist currently on the rolls. 

Meanwhile, the paper also announced the creation of a new Lifestyle section, with former TimeOut Sydney/Melbourne editorial director Alyx Gorman as its editor. The section will offer Australian-themed stories from an array of contributors including MasterChef Australia season II winner Adam Liaw and restauranteur Palisa Anderson.
