Baidawi to helm GQ Mideast edition

By Jonas Lopez in Media News on

Adam Baidawi is set to be the new EIC of GQ’s upcoming Middle East edition.

Scheduled for launch next month, GQ Middle East is being published under a partnership between parent firm Conde Nast and the ITP Media Group.

Baidawi is moving to Dubai, UAE, to start working with the new team, which also includes staff handling a bilingual website and social media accounts.

The move is also a return to roots, as Baidawi was born in Abu Dhabi to Iraqi parents then later grew up in Australia. At the time of his appointment, he had been writing and taking pictures for GQ Australia and also worked as the New York Times’ Australia correspondent. He is also GQ’s youngest EIC to date, at 28 years old.

“The idea of what it means to be a man, and the values of men, are changing globally. The thing is, we’re not speaking to any one Middle Eastern country. We’re speaking to a whole region of men, who are very internationally minded and often internationally educat

GQ Style special set for GQ 20th anniversary

By Jonas Lopez in Media News on

GQ Australia’s upcoming 20th anniversary will include the release of a special edition of GQ Style magazine.

GQ Australia editorial director Edwina McCann said the special GQ Style will focus on Australian men’s fashion trends that have gained traction around the world. The content will also include pictorials featuring some of the most exquisite clothing brands around. Although GQ Style is designed as a complement to GQ Australia’s content thrust, it will be a stand-alone title down the road.

“In GQ Style, we aim to illustrate the growing influence international luxury fashion is having on Australian trends and vice versa, championing local brands making it on the global scene while delving deeper into how luxury houses have reimagined Australia’s fashion landscape. There really has never been a more exciting time for menswear fashion,” said GQ Australia editor Mike Christensen.

The new magazine will be out on September 27, 2018.

Jetstar Magazine to fly again

By Jonas Lopez in Media News on

The inflight magazine of budget airline Jetstar is ready for publishing once more, with the Medium Rare Content Agency (MRCA) leading the charge.

The agency recently bought the publishing contract from Hardie Grant Media. Under a new deal, Medium Rare will facilitate Jetstar Magazine’s relaunch in October 2018. The agency will also start working on Jetstar Asia Magazine, the first issue of which will be for November-December 2018, liaise with Jetstar’s own content division to create unique material for and specific EDMs, and also handle the carrier’s media sales duties.

Jacqueline Lunn will vacate the editorship of Qantas Travel Insider and QantasLink Spirit magazines – both under MRCA’s aegis – to handle editing of Jetstar Magazine and the associated digital material. Former BBC Good Food-Middle East editor Sudeshna Ghosh comes in as deputy editor, as incumbent Chloe Cann is going freelance.

Tonightly With Tom Ballard scrapped

By Jonas Lopez in Media News on

The ABC has cancelled ABC Comedy talk show Tonightly with Tom Ballard.

The network announced today that its final episode will air on September 7, 2018. The cancellation, the network management stated, was prompted by a need to explore new content for different demographic markets.

The show has logged at least 150 episodes since premiering on December 4, 2017.

“Getting the chance to host Tonightly has been an absolute honour and privilege, even though we never got to be on Media Watch. I feel so proud of the ‘work’ we made and I feel so lucky to have been surrounded by laughter and stupidity for an entire year. My sincere thanks go to the brilliant Tonightly team, the ABC and the fans of Cory Bernardi,” said Ballard on the announcement.

Community Newspaper Group to close five Perth publications

By Jonas Lopez in Media News on

The Community Newspaper Group is closing five local newspapers.

The company announced that the first week of September will be the last week of deliveries for Perth Hills mastheads Midland Kalamunda Reporter, Comment News, Hills Avon Valley Gazette, and The Advocate, as would the North Coast Times. The decision was made as a result of a company-wide publication review that tracked each paper’s readership and advertising numbers.

However, it is not known how many of the personnel at those papers will be absorbed into other publications. Subscribers will still be able to get their local news from the website.

The Western Suburbs Weekly, Melville Times, Fremantle and Cockburn Gazette, Southern Gazette, Weekend and Kwinana Courier, Canning Times, Eastern Reporter, Stirling Times, Wanneroo and Joondalup Times, Wanneroo Weekender, Guardian Express and Coastal Times will stay on due to high engagement with the community, the review concluded.
